ESG

ESG is rapidly growing and evolving, as many investors look to incorporate ESG factors into the investment process. Also, international regulations ask investors to comply with new legislation on integrating ESG portfolios and mandatory reporting. The ESG framework is shaping investment and is fast becoming an integrated norm. Stakeholders across the business broad spectrum see ESG factors as a gateway into a company’s future. ESG reporting and metrics are also an important indicator of a company’s overall health, and ESG reports can lay the foundation for a compelling story about the impact your company is making on the world or the region it operates. Tying all three elements into consolidated reporting (using a reputable ESG framework/reporting standard), and to your broader strategy, signals that your company is taking the necessary steps to be viable and profitable in the long run.

In recent years, a number of groups, such as the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, the TCFD, the Global Reporting Initiative, and International Business Council of the World Economic Forum, have issued ESG-related reporting disclosures. Others, including the IFRS Foundation, are considering how to incorporate sustainability information in corporate reporting. Just as financial reporting is prepared in accordance with US GAAP, IFRS, or another accounting framework, ESG standards and frameworks allow companies to disclose standardized information. They provide consistency and comparability, and they benefit from due process, enabling investors to make more informed decisions.

Compelling ESG reporting doesn’t come together in a flash. It requires collaboration and insight from across the organisation to work towards common goals as a team. Many organisations start by assessing the maturity of their data. Others want to focus on climate change, diversity, equity and inclusion or other significant areas of reporting. Some are further along in their thinking and ready to make optimizations.
